Organist/Pianist

Basic Responsibilities

  • Play 10-rank Moller Pipe Organ as the principal instrument for Sunday worship and special worship services, including Ash Wednesday, Lenten midweek, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, Easter Sunrise, Christmas Eve, and any other services designated by the church.

  • Play piano for Saturday night services.

  • Play preludes and postludes at each service.

  • Coordinate appropriate and proper care of the Church’s organ, pianos, electric keyboard, and any other instruments owned, leased, or rented.

  • Play for weddings (if requested by the bride and groom), and funerals in the church, or make every effort to procure an acceptable substitute.

  • Work with the New Sound Team once each month help provide a contemporary-style service

Other Responsibilities

  • Select appropriate music for all services mentioned above, including offertories, communion meditations, preludes and postludes, to complement the Lutheran liturgies and the Liturgical calendar.

  • Accompany music instrumentalists at special services.

  • Communicate and collaborate with Pastor and the Parish Administrator.

  • Choose hymns for Sunday services, and other services, in collaboration with the Pastor.

  • Communicate with the Worship & Music Committee about any special services. Attend Worship & Music Committee meetings whenever possible.

  • Obtain authorization from the Worship & Music Committee for purchases that exceed budgeted amounts.

Additional Requirements

  • Recognize that the Pastor and the Worship & Music Committee Chairperson administratively direct the services of the Organist.

  • Meet annually with the Parish Administration Committee to review the job description, and discuss any changes or issues applicable to this position.

  • Accept responsibility to procure all necessary permits, licenses or certifications and abide by all applicable copyright laws, regulations and ordinances of the USA and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

  • Adhere to all rules and regulations prescribed by the church, including Equal Opportunity Laws, and secure and maintain Act 33/34 Clearances.

  • Be responsible for making every effort to secure a substitute during her/his absence, and giving the necessary information about the service to the organist and to the Parish Administrator.
