DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Purpose: To oversee and plan the music ministry of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in conjunction with the Pastor.

ACCOUNTABILITY

· The Director of Music shall report to the Board of Worship, working with the Pastor.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is defined as salary, part-time, year-round.

· Plan, select, and prepare preludes, postludes, and offertories.

· Provide organ accompaniment (or piano/keyboard when applicable) for scheduled Sunday Worship Services, currently holding one Worship service each Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

· Provide organ accompaniment (or piano/keyboard when applicable) for special services, not limited to but to include: mid-week Lenten Services, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Thanksgiving Eve, mid-week Advent Services, and Christmas Eve.

· Provide organ accompaniment (or piano/keyboard when applicable) for funeral services for members.

· Be available for weddings for members, requesting a reasonable fee.

· Serve as the Choir Director holding weekly rehearsals with the adult choir, as well as the possibility of a Bell Choir, with breaks as necessary, usually breaking over the summer.

· Support the church’s worship environment through the well-prepared execution of music presented by the choir, soloists, and special musicians when available.

· Work with the Pastor on selection of hymns and special music.

· Support special events and activities of the congregation when music is included.

· Serves as an advisory member of the Board of Worship and attend meetings when requested.

· Shall have a right of refusal for others requesting to play the organ, notifying the Board of Worship.

· Purchase music and supplies to support the music program, as covered in the church budget.

· Oversee and maintain music library (sorting, filing).

· Shall have the responsibility and the authority to make sure that the upkeep and maintenance of all of Trinity's musical 'apparatus' (organ, pianos, hand bells, etc.) is completed as needed.

· Report music selection information to “ONE License” for copyright purposes.

· Other duties as required.

SKILLS REQUIRED

· Primary ability to play the organ.

· Secondary ability to play the piano/keyboard.

· Ability to select music appropriate for worship at Trinity Lutheran Church.

PAID TIME OFF

· The Director of Music shall have two (2) paid weeks of time off per year [the budget covers paid substitutes for two (2) Sundays per year]. Time off not used cannot roll over to the next year.

· Shall notify the church office a minimum of two weeks prior to but as soon as planned absences are known to allow for scheduling of a substitute organist/pianist.

Trinity is a liturgical Lutheran Church using the Divine Services as written in the Lutheran Service Book. We are a part of the Southeastern District (SED) of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS)

One of our greatest assets is our beautiful pipe organ which is a 2 manual instrument originally built c. 1965 by Mark E. Wetzel in Waynesboro, Virginia. It was updated and enlarged in 1987, and now consists of 16 ranks in 14 speaking registers resourced over 2 manuals and pedal and controlled by a solid-state relay system and combination action. The organ also contains 3 electronic pedal extensions, chimes, and zimbelstern.
